Carnival is here, and Córdoba takes to the streets to enjoy this traditional festival.
Carnival is one of the most anticipated festivities. It is an ancient celebration that has evolved over time and has spread to very diverse corners of the world.
A carnival full of tradition and joy
The Carnival festival allows us to go out into the street and show ourselves as we are. Although the origin of these festivals is not clear, one of the most widespread hypotheses is that their origin began more than 5,000 years ago, among the Sumerian and Egyptian populations. For the Sumerians it was a way to expel evil spirits from the crops, celebrating a great party. For their part, the Egyptians consecrated these days to Apis, the god associated with fertility.
The first information we have about the carnivals in Cordoba dates to October 30, 1822, when we have knowledge of the first carnival gathering that took place in the city.
In the early days, the history of the Carnival of Cordoba is remembered by the Plaza de la Corredera and the surrounding neighborhoods, to soon move on to the neighborhoods of San Agustín, San Rafael, etc. with many participants associated with the Philharmonic Center, being its first renowned figures who promoted and encouraged the Carnival party.
Whatever its origin, the important thing is that in Cordoba the festival of D. Carnal has already given its starting signal. On February 9, the traditional “salmorejá” took place in the Plaza de la Corredera and many more surprises await us.
Activities and events not to be missed
